Watercolor Resist Firework Paintings – Crayon Watercolor Kid’s Project

Watercolor resist craft project

Watercolor resist art projects are a super fun, low-mess activity with gorgeous results. The kids will have a blast and I just love my kids’ crayon watercolor artwork. I have a few in frames in our playroom and they really look legit!

If you don’t remember the watercolor resist technique from grade school- it’s easy, so much fun and the results are always stunning- perfect for entertaining kids for a while! The best part about this activity is that it can be scaled up or down to be age-appropriate for a wide range! All 3 of my kids love this and I won’t tell you how long I could be entertained with these simple materials:

  • Watercolor paper
  • Watercolor paints
  • Crayons, pastels, or a wax stick or candle
  • A paintbrush
  • A cup of water

Take your crayons, pastels, or wax stick (literally any candlestick would work as well) and draw whatever design you’d like on the paper. You can do something simple like lines or shapes, or you can go for something more complex like a firework design. Just remember that whatever you draw will resist the watercolor paint and remain white on the paper.

Next, it’s time to add some color! Fill your cup with water and grab your paintbrush. Dip the brush into the water and then into your watercolor paint. Start painting over the crayon or pastel marks on the paper. Don’t worry about being too neat – the watercolor paint will naturally spread and blend as it absorbs into the paper. I always tell my kids- take your time because you want to notice how the colors blend and spread as you work!

When you’re happy with your watercolor resist painting, set it aside to dry. And voila! You’ve just created a beautiful watercolor resist painting with your kids. (Or earned yourself a quiet 20 mins and a happy kiddo)

Enjoy your evening and happy creating! Cheers!
